Specialist Pathway in Australia

Australia’s healthcare system is renowned for its high standards and exceptional care, attracting medical professionals from around the world. For overseas-trained specialists in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G), gaining recognition and the ability to practice in Australia involves navigating a series of structured pathways.

These pathways, managed by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), are designed to ensure that international medical graduates (IMGs) meet the rigorous standards expected of Australian-trained specialists. Let’s explore the different RANZCOG Specialist IMG (SIMG) pathways, including the eligibility criteria, assessment processes, and potential outcomes for those looking to build a career in Australia.

Understanding the RANZCOG Specialist IMG Pathways

RANZCOG offers several pathways for overseas-trained O&G specialists and subspecialists to achieve recognition and practice in Australia. These pathways include:

1. Generalist Obstetrics and Gynaecology SIMG Pathway

– Competitive entry into the program.

– Accreditation against published standards with regular re-accreditation.

The Assessment Process

The RANZCOG SIMG assessment consists of two parts: an initial paper-based assessment and a follow-up interview.

Paper-Based Assessment:

– Conducted by Fellows of the College on the SIMG Assessor Panel.

– Evaluates eligibility for the SIMG assessment interview based on the provided application.

SIMG Assessment Interview:

– Conducted by members of the SIMG Assessment Panel, including a Community Representative.

– Explores the specialist training, experience, CPD, and understanding of the Australian healthcare system and culture.

Assessment Outcomes

After the interview, applicants are assessed as either substantially comparable, partially comparable, or not comparable.

Substantially Comparable:

– May require up to 12 months of supervised specialist practice.

– Completion of CPD activities and a multi-source feedback assessment during the supervised practice period.

Partially Comparable:

– Required to complete supervised practice, various In-Hospital Clinical Assessment (IHCA) modules, workshops, and written and oral exams.
