The Problem

Not Ready for a Permanent Move To Australia?

Most UK GPs begin with the same assumption: Australia means a long employer-sponsored visa process, complicated registration and uncertainty about where they can work.

The reality is a little more complex.

For eligible UK GPs with MRCGP + CCT, a Working Holiday Visa can be an option to gain Australian GP experience, explore different locations and understand the healthcare system before making longer-term plans.

However, the visa is only one part of the journey. Doctors still need the right registration pathway, suitable GP roles and an understanding of the requirements that apply.

What Ray Rekruiters helps you understand:

Check if your MRCGP + CCT meets the requirements

See if the Working Holiday Visa pathway suits you

Understand the registration, job and supervision steps

Know if a six-month rotation across suitable centres is possible

A Practical Route To Your Australia GP Experience

01. Start With Your Qualification

The Medical Board of Australia lists MRCGP together with a GMC-awarded CCT among accepted GP qualifications for the Expedited Specialist pathway, subject to detailed requirements. Your documents, training route and registration position must still be assessed individually.

02. Check The Working Holiday Visa Route

The Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) is available to eligible UK passport holders aged 18–35. It may allow short-term work in Australia, but it carries conditions, including a general six-month limit with one employer.

03. Match With A Suitable GP Role

Ray Rekruiters assesses suitable Australia GP opportunities and can explore a structured rotation, such as six months at one centre followed by six months at another, where it is lawful, operationally appropriate and available.

FAQs

MRCGP, CCT And Australia GP Jobs

Does MRCGP + CCT mean I can automatically work as a GP in Australia?

No. MRCGP together with a qualifying CCT is listed on the Medical Board of Australia’s accepted qualification list for the Expedited Specialist pathway, but you must meet the detailed qualification specifications and complete the required registration process. A role and appropriate supervision may also be required.

No. A tourist or visitor visa does not allow you to work in Australia.
Eligible UK passport holders may explore the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) as an alternative pathway to travel and work in Australia, subject to meeting the visa requirements and conditions.

Usually, Working Holiday visa holders may work for one employer for up to six months. There can be exemptions or permission pathways in particular situations, but you must check the current conditions that apply to you. This is why a two-centre rotation can be relevant to assess.

It may be possible for eligible doctors, but the pathway depends on individual visa eligibility, registration, employer arrangements, role availability and other applicable requirements. The assessment helps clarify what is realistic for you.

Completed MRCGP + CCT is the clearest fit for the pathway discussed here. If your CCT is expected within six months, you can still request an assessment to plan documents, timing and next steps.
