If you’ve found yourself searching for ‘GP Jobs Perth’ on a quiet Sunday evening, you’ve probably already started imagining what working might actually be like. Perhaps it’s looking for a different pace of practice, or simply seeing what else is out there.
Perth can be an interesting option to explore, but the job search is only one part of the move. Before you get too attached to a particular role, you’ll need to understand your eligibility to work as a GP in Australia, whether you meet the relevant requirements and what different practices can offer.
From getting registered to understanding the Perth GP market, working arrangements and life in Western Australia, this guide by Ray Rekruiters covers the practical information you need as you explore GP jobs in Perth.
Where is Perth, WA?
Perth is the capital of Western Australia, sitting on the state’s west coast along the Swan River, with the Indian Ocean on its doorstep. It’s smaller and more spread out than Sydney or Melbourne, and that shows in daily life: less traffic, more space, and a noticeably slower pace.
The coastline is one of Perth’s defining features. Beaches like Cottesloe and Scarborough are a short drive from most suburbs, and locals tend to treat the beach as a normal after-work option. Beyond the city, Western Australia opens up quickly, with the Swan Valley wine region, Rottnest Island and the southwest forests all within reach for a weekend trip.
If you’re weighing up GP Jobs Perth against roles in the eastern states, Perth generally offers a more relaxed, outdoor lifestyle with easy access to nature, even though it sits fairly isolated from the rest of the country.
Working as a GP in Perth
GP practices in and around Perth vary quite a bit, which matters when you’re comparing roles rather than assuming they’re interchangeable.
Metropolitan Perth has everything from busy bulk-billing clinics to smaller private-billing practices with longer consultation times. Regional Western Australia offers different conditions again, sometimes with different patient demographics and a different pace altogether. Full-time, part-time and flexible arrangements are common, and many practices are used to onboarding overseas-trained doctors.
Lifestyle Benefits of Perth
For a lot of GPs, lifestyle matters just as much as the job itself, and Perth tends to score well here.
The climate is a major draw: long, dry summers and mild winters, with far more sunshine than most of the GPs see in a good year. Combined with the beaches and outdoor culture, it’s an easy place to build a routine around, whether that’s walking, swimming or just being outside more than you’re used to.
It’s also considered family-friendly, with good schools and a general sense of space. There’s a decent café and restaurant scene too, and weekends often mean a trip to the Swan Valley, Rottnest Island, or somewhere along the coast. None of this guarantees a perfect work-life balance on its own, since that still comes down to the specific role you take. But Perth gives you a solid backdrop to build that balance around.
What Does a Typical GP Role in Perth Look Like?
Day to day, general practice in Perth covers familiar ground: consultations, preventive healthcare, chronic disease management and general family medicine across all ages, usually alongside practice nurses and sometimes allied health staff.
What differs is the shape of the role. Some practices lean into chronic disease management and care plans, others see more acute presentations, and some build in longer preventive-health consultations. The exact mix depends on the practice, its location, the patient population, and whether you’re salaried or on a percentage-of-billings arrangement.
What Can You Earn as a GP in Perth?
This is usually the first question on everyone’s mind, and it’s also the hardest to answer with a single number, because earnings vary quite a lot depending on the setup.
Many Perth GP roles work on a percentage-of-billings model, commonly somewhere around 65 to 70 percent, sometimes with an hourly guarantee for the first few months while you build a patient base. Others offer a straightforward hourly rate instead. Your actual take-home depends on your billing model, consultation volume, hours worked, practice location, experience, and any additional services you take on.
Because of this, quoting one figure as “the” Perth GP salary isn’t accurate. Roles currently advertised span a wide range, and two GPs in similar-sounding jobs can end up with quite different earnings depending on billing structure alone. Rather than chasing the highest headline figure, it’s worth looking at the complete picture: hours, patient volume, practice support, and how the lifestyle side stacks up against the money.
